Magnetic crustal thickness codes

Magnetic crustal thickness over Eurasia, Africa, and North America

3SMAC starting crustal thickness model, MF-4 satellite magnetic field observations, and DAH oceanic remanent model and associated Readme file

Chulick & Mooney (C&M) North American model and key and code to combine 3SMAC and C&M

Magnetic crustal thickness code utilizing 3SMAC+C&M as starting model, iteratively updating crustal thickness until MF-4 satellite field observations are satisfied and annotated output from code

Final magnetic crustal thickness model and GMT code to produce upper right figure

Assumptions

1. Induced magnetization dominant on continents (assumption fails over Bangui and Kursk).

2. Lateral crustal thickness variations dominate over magnetic susceptibility variations.

3. Remanent magnetizations in oceans accounted for by Dyment and Arkani-Hamed (DAH) model.

For a discussion of these assumptions, and a complete reference list, see Fox Maule et al., Science, 309, 464-467, 2005.

Computing Environment

1. Fortran (g77 here)

2. GMT (Wessel and Smith)

3. Bash unix shell with usual utilities (sed..)
